        Flash MP3 player like the Ipod Nano uses solid state drives… similar to your CompactFlash or SD drives. There’s no moving parts, so they’re much better on the battery.

        A harddrive mp3 player uses micro HDDs or even laptop HDDs (2.5). They do have moving parts, so battery life is less, and because there’s moving parts, they’re more prone to failure. But they have much more capacity (but also larger in physical size).

        With Apple’s new generation of Ipods, the current generations are dirt cheap now. You can get the 2GB Nano’s for $99 shipped to your door:

        a hard drive mp3 player is just a hard drive. A flash mp3 player uses flash memory instead of a hard disk. The hard drive type will hold more, but has moving parts which will eventually wear out. The Flash type does not have any moving parts. Try newegg.com or amazon.com for purchasing.
